FAQs

Do I need a Single or Dual Flap Model?

Most customers select the dual flap model if the dog door leads directly to the outside or to an unheated garage. The dual flap version will provide superior insulation, while the single flap is used for very temperate climates, going from one room to another within the house or if from porches and lanais to the outside.

Remember, a dog door is an open access to the outdoors, you may be rest easier with the seal and barrier of a dual flap model.

How do I choose the right size door for my pet?

Please feel free to use the Pet Door Sizing Guide on many of our product pages. Remember that you want to select a pet door that will clear the tallest pet's shoulders by 1.5-2"...and have a low enough step over rise to allow for easy navigation given the pets breed, age and mobility now and in the future.

The sizing guide is a good starting point for determining the best size dog door for your pet. These are only recommendations; you know your pet best. Certain factors may alter these recommendations such as step-down distance to outside ground level, multiple pets using the door and wall thickness.

Do Smaller pets, like cats, have any problems using larger pet door sizes?

We have numerous customers who have multiple pets. Even the largest, Behemoth, size can be used by the household cat. You will notice that while dogs go headfirst through the doggie door flaps, cats will use their paws to gently push the corner of the flap.

Good door

I bought this door for my 3 beagles (all 7 years old) and Bassett hound (1 1/2years old). I had never had a doggy door before. I did A LOT of research and review checking. I wanted something the dogs would be able (and safe) to use. I also wanted something that would not let a lot of heat or air conditioning out and not let the hot and cold weather in. My husband didn’t want me to get one. He didn’t want bugs, other animals, or the weather to get in. So we compromised and bought a doggy door 😁. I live in Minnesota, we get the extreme weather on both ends. I found this one and thought, let’s do it! I installed this door a little over a week ago. So far it’s been ok. I can’t say great just yet.
Delivery was fast! I had it within a week from ordering. Box arrived in good shape and the packaging was secure.
Installation was pretty simple (even for a non-handyman like myself), I did have the help of my handyman husband though. Hardest part and most nerve racking part for me was getting the correct height for my dogs. Once the hole is cut, there would be no going back if it was too high. It worked out great though! My dogs are able to go in and out independently with no problems… phew!!
The build quality is good and sturdy. We did put a line of silicone inside the hole around the frame just for extra insulation, as well as around the outside of the frame. It was placed in a raised panel exterior door, so we wanted to be sure everything was sealed up really well!! I did buy the training door as well, being my dogs had never used a doggy door before. I did not want to use it if I didn’t have to. It does not come with rivets to attach it, and I didn’t want to remove the factory ones unless absolutely no other option.
I was very surprised, my beagles went right through it, no issues, only took flipping it open a couple of times and holding a treat on the opposite side to get them to go through. After 2 or 3 times of that and they were pros at using it. My basset hound on the other hand was not so warming to the idea of letting herself in and out (she’s a princess and we are her peasants), and struggled on the concept of using her nose to open the flaps. She tried using her face and squashing her eye into the flaps or using her foot to open and not figuring out how to walk with her one foot raised. I was thinking I may have no choice but to use the training flap. But after a day of trial and error, following her brothers and sister through the door with lots of praise when she’d get through, she is using it like a pro as well. It did take them a day or two to figure out only 1 can fit at a time and they had to take turns.
We had a storm the other night, with 75 mph winds and rain, the flaps didn’t even move!!! No rain came in!! So I can say that it’s definitely great for the wind and rain staying out. The temps have been upper 80s with high humidity, heat indexes have been into the 100s, and no heat felt coming in when the flaps are closed! Very impressed so far with that!!
The issue I’m having and have sent an email to Omniapaws (where I purchased the door from) is when the dogs go through sometimes the magnets stick to each other and flaps don’t secure completely, leaving a hole open to the outside. The flaps especially stick when they go through it slowly (unlike when they run through like freight trains to attack the leaf that’s blowing into their fenced in area, the occasional bird that lands on their fence, or the rabbit that is outside their fence). Omniapaws was quick to respond to my email, but stated they needed to contact the manufacturer to get me an answer on the flaps sticking together sometimes and what I can do to fix this issue. That was 4 day's ago as I write this review. I’m still waiting for a response or solution. This issue is the only reason why 4 stars instead of 5 given. If I get an answer and solution that resolves this problem, I will come back and update my review.
It seems to be a durable door so far and I think will last a long time. Pretty happy and satisfied so far.
